I am interested in understanding how host plant quality impacts the overwintering survival of a declining wetland butterfly, the Baltimore checkerspot. After rearing caterpillars on a native or non-native host plant, I will assess winter survival under two laboratory-simulated climate stressors: heat waves and drought. I will also explore gene expression differences under the different climate stressor treatments. My broad interests include: insect overwintering survival and native insect conservation.
